Microsoft announces $4 billion AI training initiative amid recent layoffs

Microsoft President Brad Smith says recent layoffs were not directly tied to the burgeoning investment in artificial intelligence.

On Wednesday, the company announced the creation of Microsoft Elevate and the intention to spend $4 billion in the next few years on a philanthropic effort to train non-profits, students, and teachers on using AI.

It also comes just a week after the company announced 9,000 layoffs as investors continue to show confidence in Microsoft’s direction. In an interview, Smith said, “We work hard to bring AI skills to people, teachers, schools, students, but people of all ages, through and with nonprofits to prepare people for a changing workplace, given AI.”
