There's a scene in the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that I think about a lot lately.
Charlie's father works at a toothpaste factory. He screws the caps on tubes. It's honest work. It pays the bills. And then one day, a machine shows up that can screw caps faster, cheaper, and without bathroom breaks.
Charlie's dad loses his job.
But at the end of the film, after Charlie wins the factory, we see his father again. He's back at the toothpaste plant. But he's not screwing caps anymore. He's repairing the machine that took his job.
That's not a happy ending. That's a warning.
The machine didn't go away. The machine won. And the only reason Charlie's dad has any job at all is because he learned how to work with the machine instead of being replaced by it.
My friends, that's exactly where we're headed. That's the era we're moving into right now. And if you're not paying attention, if you're not preparing, you're going to be the guy who used to screw on caps—with nowhere to go and no skills to offer.
This video is not an endorsement of AI. I know that there are many of you who are already seething and lashing out at me in the comments, so I want to be very clear about this. I think AI is overhyped, often stupid, and often riddled with mistakes. But I also think, more importantly, it’s being used by corporations in ways that should concern everyone.
But it doesn't matter what I think. It doesn't matter what you think. This isn’t just in hollywood or gaming or media. This is everything everywhere all at once. The train is moving. The only question is whether we’re on it or under it.
