The use of generative AI tools in low- and middle-income countries is multiplying—from math tutors for children to advisory tools for farmers. Yet there is limited evidence on whether they work as intended or improve lives. While rigorous impact evaluations remain vital, new AI-specific practices—prevalent in the tech sector but potentially unfamiliar to development practitioners—offer fresh ways to assess the performance of development interventions.
