Why are chatbots triggering psychotic episodes in humans? Why are patients arriving at psychiatric wards with elaborate conspiracy theories, paranoid thought spirals, and evidence files filled with thousands of AI chatbot conversations?
This documentary examines the phenomenon that some clinicians are calling “AI psychosis”-the intersection of AI chatbots, social isolation, confirmation bias, and mental health vulnerability. We trace the evolution from ELIZA’s simple pattern matching to today’s sophisticated language models that validate, agree, and engage without pushback or reality testing.
We examine documented cases of individuals experiencing psychotic breaks linked to AI interaction, explore how sycophancy and algorithmic reinforcement can distort perception, and analyze the role of parasocial relationships with AI in mental health deterioration. We ask whether AI can trigger psychosis or simply amplifies existing vulnerabilities, present expert perspectives, and expose the absence of meaningful safeguards in consumer AI products.
A special thanks to Dr Sid Warrier for sharing his insights and lending his lens to this story.
